At this point in his life, Mark felt like he was at something of a crossroads. He made considerable money running a bar in the US base. It was the only one on the base so there was no competition, not unless people wanted to head out to one of the other bases.

Still, he tried not to make people's lives difficult. Prices were kept as low as he could manage. There was no need to gouge the guys too much with his pricing, but it was still expensive to import all the food and booze. Still, not many people complained about it, not once they saw the prices on the French base.

One of the bartenders was taking the bulk of the orders, which left Mark to clean up and make sure all the ordering was in shape. People were keeping to themselves, especially after he’d needed to throw a couple of them out for starting a fight.

Even when Taylor wasn't around, the guy somehow managed to start fights. Still, Mark managed to set up a betting pool that made sure that everyone resolved things properly.

He waved Alex Diggs over to the bar when the man entered and poured a couple of fingers of his best scotch into a glass for him.

"I appreciate the help," Mark said as he pushed the glass closer. "I'll have to hire full-time bouncers at this rate."

"But then the added expenses will push prices up and the people won't have that." Diggs downed the scotch in a single gulp. "Rather let the people who like to drink in peace around here do the peacekeeping."

"What if no one's around who wants to keep the peace?"

The soldier paused and nodded. "Right. So yeah, maybe get yourself a bouncer."

"I’ll look into it." Mark poured the man another drink but charged him for it this time. "What do you think Taylor's odds are of making it out of the Zoo alive?"

"I'm not a betting man," Diggs answered.

"You were when you bet that Sal Jacobs would still be alive when he was kidnapped."

"True. Like Sal, I'd say Taylor has every chance in the world. With that said, I'll have a chat with the commandant and maybe a couple of the commanding officers to see if we can't organize a rescue out there. If not for Everett, then for Taylor. I think we owe him that much and the Zoo won’t be happy to see him back."
